iPhone Lock Screen Calendar Wallpaper: Automatic Daily Updates

Live calendar wallpaper on an iPhone lock screen

A live calendar wallpaper keeps useful time information visible on your iPhone lock screen. It can show the year as daily dots, upcoming events, a countdown, or a broader life calendar. For a date-first layout, see how to make an auto-updating countdown wallpaper.

Unlike a normal background, the image needs to change as the date changes. On iPhone, Apple Shortcuts can request the latest wallpaper from one dot and set it automatically each morning.

What “live” means for a calendar wallpaper

This is not a continuously animated Live Photo. It is a current calendar image refreshed on a schedule. A daily update is enough for views based on dates, habits, journal entries, or year progress.

That approach has useful advantages:

  • the whole lock screen becomes a visual canvas;
  • the image can contain a large grid without using widget space;
  • the design stays quiet behind the clock and notifications;
  • Apple Shortcuts handles the update without daily manual editing.

What can appear on the wallpaper?

one dot supports multiple ways to make time visible, including:

  • year progress as 365 daily dots;
  • life in weeks;
  • days until or since a date;
  • calendar agenda and reminders;
  • habits, journal, mood, notes, and tasks;
  • steps and other connected information in the iOS app.

Choose one primary purpose for each wallpaper. A focused year grid is easier to read than a screen filled with unrelated statistics.

How to create an auto-updating iPhone calendar wallpaper

1. Create a Photo lock screen

The Shortcuts action needs a lock screen based on a photo. Long-press the iPhone lock screen, add a new Photo wallpaper, and choose any temporary image. You will replace it during setup.

2. Design the calendar

Use the one dot wallpaper generator or the one dot iOS app. Select the calendar mode, colors, layout, and labels.

Keep the clock area clear. Test text contrast with the screen dimmed, because a design that looks bright in the editor may be harder to read on the actual lock screen.

3. Add the one dot Shortcut

Open the iPhone setup guide and install the provided Shortcut. Add your unique wallpaper configuration when prompted.

The Shortcut requests the latest image and passes it to the system Set Wallpaper action.

4. Create a daily automation

In Apple Shortcuts:

  1. open the Automation tab;
  2. create a Time of Day automation;
  3. choose a morning time;
  4. select the one dot Shortcut;
  5. set it to run immediately when that option is available.

Run it once manually and approve any required wallpaper or network permissions.

Why did the wallpaper not update?

Wrong lock screen changed

If you use Focus modes, iOS may update the currently active lock screen. Make sure the intended Photo wallpaper is active when the automation runs, or connect it to the relevant Focus setup.

Shortcut asks for confirmation

Review the automation and choose immediate execution instead of asking before running when your iOS version offers that setting.

Image is cropped or blurred

Edit the Photo wallpaper and review its crop and blur options. Return to one dot and move the grid if important content overlaps the clock or widgets.

Date did not advance

Run the Shortcut manually. If it works, check the automation time and permissions. If the downloaded image is still old, verify the saved wallpaper configuration.

Calendar wallpaper or lock screen widget?

Widgets are useful for small, interactive pieces of information. A calendar wallpaper works better when the visual itself is the point: a year grid, life calendar, or large arrangement of days.

You can use both. Keep the wallpaper for broad context and widgets for actions or precise live data.

Set yours up

Create your calendar wallpaper, then follow the complete iPhone automation guide. After the one-time setup, the lock screen can stay current every day.
